About Council

Cloncurry Shire Council is a future-focused, community-responsive organisation with a charter to enhance all facets of life in the Shire. Creating this improved future is underpinned by an increased focus on planning for the long-term needs of the community and coordinating the delivery and ongoing management of services, infrastructure, and facilities.

Popularly known as the “Friendly Heart of the Great North West”, Cloncurry has the feel of a western town with the progressiveness of a modern community. The ‘Curry’, as it is affectionately known by locals, is 120km east of Mount Isa and 400km south of the Gulf of Carpentaria.

The Position

Reporting to the CEO and with responsibility for a team of 6 and a budget of $35M your charter will be to lead the PMO office to plan and deliver a portfolio/program of projects and capital works for Council and the community.

There are further benefits and improvements to be achieved to take their project management to the next level through continuing to scrutinise and challenge current project and program performance data. The implementation of new software to work smarter across all areas of council will support your focus around business improvement practices.

Importantly, staff are engaged with having a PMO and the opportunity to grow and further develop their skills with this dedicated focus.

Council manages its own water treatment and sewerage plant, airport, childcare centre, housing, and community facilities through to the sale yards which .5M cattle pass through each year. The scope and diversity of the position would be on par with several larger Councils and is what excites people coming out to the region.  There are projects happening across all areas including flood damage and roadworks through QRA.

The Person

There is a genuine opportunity in this role to deliver true business impact. Regarded as a confident and resilient leader you enjoy influencing and motivating project teams. With appropriate tertiary qualifications, you are working in a similar role in local government or for a tier one construction company on significant infrastructure projects and have a strong understanding of managing contracts and know what to look for to ensure ‘on time’ completion. If your experience is the latter - being able to make a difference to a community and having some work/life balance which is hard to achieve in private enterprise will appeal.

You will share Council’s vision and will be driven to deliver on their commitment to providing value for the community across all projects and to finding ways to maximise return on investment through effective collaboration with a range of internal and external stakeholders.

Why this Role?

The diversity of the operation is substantial and puts Council on par with several much larger Councils. There is simply no area in local government you will not have projects, so covering every element will provide a springboard for enhancing your future career prospects. Voted the friendliest town in QLD – there is a strong community feel, and Cloncurry represents a great place for families to feel safe and to enjoy every advantage of living in outback QLD.

This is no ordinary role in local government.  Whilst Cloncurry may not be somewhere you have thought of living and working this is a rare chance to continue with the PMO charter and to work on a diverse range of projects. If you are keen to leverage your experience in local government or outside of the private sector, this is a move that will be hard to equal elsewhere and will undoubtedly enable you to realise your future career aspirations.

This is a regional centre that has more facilities than most including a fully staffed medical centre, hospital, airport etc.

A Salary of $160-180K + super + FMV and provision of a rent-free family home and generous relocation assistance will be offered to the successful candidate.
