About the role

This opportunity is for an Interim Payroll Officer, part of the People, Customer Contact and Communications branch and the People and Business Performance Group for an approximate period of 6 months.

The duties of the interim payroll officer will be;

  • Promote and maintain a positive customer service focus in the delivery of payroll services to the organisation.
  • Interpret payroll data using advanced analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Maintain a high degree of confidentiality relating to payroll documentation.
  • Analyse the relevant Awards and Council’s Certified Agreements to ensure accurate payment of employee
    entitlements, allowances and overtime.
  • Enter data from timesheets, leave applications, and any other related requests as required.
    File and/or electronically register payroll documents.
  • Assist with the preparation and payment of Council’s fortnightly payroll in accordance with the relevant
    internal control processes for employee payments.
  • Assist in the maintenance of Council’s employee database, including new employee appointments, employee
    terminations, classification updates, higher duties payments, deductions and allowances, leave accruals,
    superannuation and salary sacrifice arrangements.
  • Assist with the implementation of changes brought about by changes to Awards, Certified Agreements and
    CPI increases as required and approved by the Organisational Development and Payroll team.
    Process backpays as required.
  • Assist in the implementation of new developments in payroll operations according to Council’s processes and
    procedures.
  • Answer payroll enquiries.
  • Generate payroll reports, employee payment summaries, statistical returns and other reports as required.

 

We are looking for someone who has the following skills and qualities;

  • High understanding of payroll processes and operations.
  • Good understanding of human resources processes and operations as they intersect with payroll operations.
  • Good understanding of taxation obligations relating to PAYG and basic understanding of FBT obligations.
  • High degree of mathematical accuracy.
  • Sound skills in the use of Microsoft Office suite of programs (particularly Excel and Word).
  • Sound skills in the use and understanding of integrated financial software.
  • Sound knowledge of contemporary office systems.
  • Good communication, organisational, interpersonal and planning skills.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills.
