About the Organisation 

Cook Shire is the largest shire in terms of land area in Queensland, covering over 100,000 square kilometres and occupying 80% of Cape York Peninsula. Cooktown is 331km from Cairns (approximately 4 hours by car on the inland road).   • Infrastructure Services

About the Position

This is a pivotal role for a candidate who is passionate about the role they can play in managing a broad portfolio of assets and of the impact they can make on the everyday lives of people within the community. Achieving important outcomes for Cook Shire Council in the management of their diverse infrastructure asset portfolio and continuously improving the way assets are managed in line with the Asset Management Strategy will be your focus.

Key objectives of the role include:

  • Coordinating the preparation and development of asset management plans and strategies, including but not limited to road works; bridges and structures; drainage networks; footpaths and cycle ways; water and wastewater systems; parks and gardens; light and heavy plant and equipment, buildings etc.
  • Working with management to implement asset lifecycle strategies that optimise the performance and resilience of Council’s asset portfolio.
  • Understand how to implement an asset performance strategy
  • Collaborating with, and providing high levels of service delivery to, multiple internal stakeholders
  • Working with relevant team members to prioritise and implement Council’s rolling annual capital and operational programs of work for asset upgrades, renewals, and planned maintenance. 

Reporting to the Director Infrastructure you will be able to make the role your own and hit the ground running whilst working together preparing service level statements across the various asset classes.

About You

Renowned for being a ‘team player’ and for being self-motivated, flexible, and able to work under pressure at times, you are also a good communicator who easily engages with a range of stakeholders.  With qualifications or experience in engineering, commerce, surveying or other relevant areas you have sound planning and organisational skills and will enthusiastically use your initiative to ultimately manage a diverse portfolio of assets. Importantly, Council is open to applicants wishing to develop their career eg you could be working in Finance and want to expand your career and specialise in asset management or alternatively you may already be working in local government or similar and have come up through the engineering or related disciplines.

Regardless, you will be able to provide evidence of business planning, risk management, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting through the analysis of operational information and trends. You will be proficient in utilising data analytics and understand modelling to learn how to optimise the balance of risk, cost, and performance.
