About the Region

Hope Vale Shire is the traditional country of the Guugu Yimithirr people. The township, with a population of approx. 1500 people, is located in a valley surrounded by tropical native bushland, mountain ranges, pristine coastal and diverse flora and fauna. The magnificent land surrounding Hope Vale covers freshwater springs, palm tree-lined rivers and beautiful bright sand dunes. Hope Vale itself is made of rich red soil. The unique coloured sands near Elim displays shades of yellow, black and red.

Fishing, National Parks and numerous recreational activities abound either within the Shire or surrounding areas.

Accessibility to Hope Vale is by sealed roads from Cairns (370 km) and Cooktown (46 km). There are daily flights between Cooktown and Cairns.

Services available in Hope Vale include a Primary School, Kindergarten, Child Care Centre, Health Centre, Police Station, Supermarket, Service Station, Café’s, Multi-Purpose Centre and Aquatic Centre.

 

About the Council 

Hope Vale Aboriginal Shire Council has an annual budget of approximately $18 million and 80 team members working across a diverse range of functions.

Council prides itself in its capacity to meet good governance and financial management practices, to establish good business practices in its operational and essential services areas and those services provided to the community from a social perspective.

About the Position

Accountable to Council, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is the Council’s principal staff officer, exercising overall management responsibility for Council’s operations.           

The main responsibilities of the CEO is to act as the primary link between Councillors and the organisation and is responsible for providing assistance to Councillors in developing policy and provides leadership to staff in achieving Council objectives. Working closely with the Director of Finance, the successful appointee will ensure the financial management of the Council maintains the very high standards achieved over the past 10 years. You will also be responsible for communicating and promoting Council’s policies to the community.

Working with the Council you will be responsible for the strategic direction of Council and identification of economic development opportunities in line with Council’s Economic Strategy and the community’s aspirations.
