South Burnett Council represents the South Burnett regional community including the towns of Kingaroy, Nanango, Wondai and Murgon.  Located in the South-East corner of Queensland 2 to 3 hours’ drive from Brisbane, Fraser Coast and Toowoomba the region is home to the Bunya Mountains and is known for its great wine, fresh produce and recreational tourist facilities.

About the Position

The Manager Finance & Sustainability will provide leadership, direction and support to the Finance branch incorporating financial services, payroll, rates, business systems and financial asset and fleet management teams. Working with your team, you will promote and deliver sound financial advice and budget compliance initiatives to the leadership team and Council contributing to the corporate governance and strategic planning of the Council for the benefit of the community.

The key responsibilities will be:

  • Provide leadership to manage all aspects of the operational performance of the Finance team including financial planning and reporting, internal and external audit function, asset management, rates, procurement and financial operations.
  • Direct and lead the establishment and application of initiatives, frameworks and resources to enable and promote financial planning and financial operations.
  • Provide high-level advice and expertise to internal and external stakeholders and customers.
  • Contribute to the formulation and review of Council’s policy including the Operational Plan and Corporate Plan.
  • Coordinate the preparation of Council’s Annual Budget in accordance with legislative requirements and lead the annual audit of Council.
  • Prepare and monitor the budget for the finance branch, including providing timely reports on variations to the General Manager, CEO and Council.
  • Ensure sufficient financial controls are in place throughout the finance section to minimise any risk.

About you

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant stream (eg. Finance, Accounting)
  • Relevant postgrad or membership (CPA) with a professional body is desirable
  • High-level leadership and strategic management experience in finance and budgets.
  • Substantial knowledge of financial goals, organisational principles, legislation and statutory obligations to align with Local Government, Council assets and community focus.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of relevant taxation legislation, including GST, FBT and payroll tax.
  • Demonstrated leadership of a finance team and experience in government desirable.

With this leadership position, you will be reporting directly to the General Manager of Finance and Corporate and developing your team to contribute to a robust and strong department.
