About the Organisation  

The South Burnett is a peanut growing and wine-producing area on the Great Dividing Range, north of the Darling Downs, in Queensland. It is with the basin of the Burnett River. The area is within two local government areas, South Burnett Region and Gympie Region.  

South Burnett Council represents the South Burnett regional community including the towns of Kingaroy, Nanango, Wondai and Murgon.  Located in the South-East corner of Queensland 2 to 3 hours’ drive from Brisbane, Fraser Coast and Toowoomba the region is home to the Bunya Mountains and is known for its great wine, fresh produce and recreational tourist facilities.

About the Position

The purpose of this role is to represent the council by providing customer-focused administration and enforcement of the Council’s Local Laws and relevant State Legislation.

The key duties of this role are:

  • Investigate and respond to customer requests
  • Provide professional and technical advice and support in relation to compliance issues
  • Undertake enforcement duties and regular inspections in accordance with relevant legislation
  • Inspect properties, investigate complaints and service notices to ensure compliance with Council’s local laws and relevant State legislation
  • Issue correspondence, directions, compliance notices and enforcement notices for alleged breaches of relevant legislation and ensure effective follow-through
  • Impound straying domestic animals, stray stock, abandoned vehicles, illegal advertising devices and other illegally placed goods as required in a public environment
  • Assist with community education programs
  • Some after-hours and weekend work will be required

About you

In this role, you will be working with people in the community to assist with compliance with Local Laws. You will need to be able to articulate confidently with all stakeholders to ensure understanding whilst upholding the values of the Council.

We are looking for someone with:

  • Experience in investigations and enforcement of local laws
  • Knowledge of legal processes and evidence collection
  • Sound knowledge of animal behaviour, animal control and animal identification
  • Ability to interpret and enforce legislation and Council’s Local Laws
  • Demonstrated experience in negotiation and conflict resolution
