Council has developed an organisational structure that maximises the effectiveness of service delivery to the community.  The council comprises the Chief Executive Officer and Executive Leadership Team along with three departments:

  • Organisational Business Services
  • Community, Economy and Innovation
  • Infrastructure Services

The Mayor, Chief Executive Officer and Directors form the Executive Leadership Team.  The role of this team is to provide consultation on issues regarding the Council's strategic direction and long term planning.

About the Position

This is a complex role covering ALL waste across the Cape and will suit a candidate who is passionate about the role they can play in leading the management of Council’s waste strategy implementation, planning, compliance and reporting services. You will have accountability for the technical and scientific management, operational support, planning, compliance and reporting aspects of Council’s Waste Services.

Building high level, effective and positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders to achieve quality service delivery outcomes whilst supporting resource recovery within a constantly changing environment is an important focus.

You will have the opportunity to develop relevant business cases in support of improved waste management and resource recovery, as well as driving, planning and implementing waste and resource recovery projects.

Reporting to the Manager Parks and Waste Operations you will be able to make the role your own and hit the ground running. The Cooktown Waste Transfer Station is the Shire’s largest and busiest waste facility, with other facilities at Ayton, Lakeland, Laura, Portland Roads and Coen + smaller areas serviced by skip bins.

About You

Renowned for being a ‘team player’ and for being self-motivated, flexible, and able to work under pressure at times, you are also a good communicator who easily engages with a range of stakeholders.  With sound experience and knowledge in the principles of planning and delivery of waste management services, you will embrace high standards of governance and risk management practices. Understandably, regulatory compliance is a significant focus and you will understand how the environmental authorities work and what is required for Council to ensure it remains compliant.

Renowned for your leadership of multidisciplinary teams you have significant experience related to waste management and/or related tertiary qualifications. Evidence of business planning, risk management, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting through the analysis of operational information and trends will be underpinned by strong IT skills.
