About the Position

Public Open Space plays an important role in the community by providing places for exercise, quiet reflection, children’s play, and organised sport. As the Townsville community grows and changes, greater attention needs to be placed on the coordination around planning and design of Councils open space and irrigation solutions. Reporting to the Principal Lead for Open Space and Irrigation Planning, you will work at part of the team to create meaningful places, renew, and upgrade existing ones with the aim of enticing and attracting people to visit these and meeting both the current and future needs of the community. Finding solutions to challenges that make a difference to people’s lives will underpin everything you do.

The role is vacant due to an internal promotion and will enable you to utilise your strong decision-making skills in the delivery of landscape and streetscape projects as well as support a team of 3 with their project delivery and career progression

Keeping the customer at the heart of all activities the position will:

  • Lead and manage the open space planning, design and technical advice of capital and operational solutions whilst ensuring a high degree of quality, effectiveness, cost, timeliness, and adherence to legislative requirements.
  • Lead and engage relevant stakeholders and establish networks with a focus on ensuring the effective provision of services and quality outcomes in relation to open space planning.
  • Lead and manage a group of subject matter experts to provide professional specialist Planning and Landscape Architectural advice to internal and external stakeholders consistent with best practice.
  • Lead the development and make recommendations of planning solutions in consultation with operations, strategy planning and financial services so new, upgrade, renewal projects and maintenance of open spaces and Irrigation can be optimised for the Townsville community.
  • Contribute to the drafting and review of council policy and planning instruments relevant to parks and open space, streetscape, place making and urban design that provides a clear vision for the City and supports sustainable economic development outcomes.

Renowned for your leadership skills and as a passionate advocate around the creation and enhancement of public open spaces you will have extensive knowledge of public space landscape architecture and/or urban development/planning and understand what is required to enhance communities. With the right combination of talent and energy underpinned by a commitment to operational excellence the position will suit an effective and decisive leader who has proven commercial acumen, highly developed stakeholder engagement skills and a strong focus on the benefit this role will bring to the community. Understandably you will be capable of working independently and leading a team through all stages from design through to construction.

A salary of up to $118K + 13.5% Super + fortnightly RDO + 5 weeks' annual leave with 17.5% loading and generous relocation assistance is available for the successful candidate. Future Learning and Development opportunities are supported together with reimbursement of some professional registration fees.
