About Council

Cloncurry Shire Council is a future-focused, community-responsive organisation with a charter to enhance all facets of life in the Shire. Creating this improved future is underpinned by an increased focus on planning for the long-term needs of the community and coordinating the delivery and ongoing management of services, infrastructure, and facilities.

Few places can claim to be as influential in shaping Australia, as Cloncurry. Birthplace of the Royal Flying Doctor Service and destination of the first Qantas flight - Cloncurry is a community that celebrates outback life. Popularly known as the “Friendly Heart of the Great Northwest,” Cloncurry has the feel of a western town with the progressiveness of a modern community. The ‘Curry+’ as it is affectionately known by locals, is 120km east of Mount Isa and 400km south of the Gulf of Carpentaria.

A new financial system has provided improved reporting capabilities for managers and supervisors. Synergysoft financials went live 18 months ago with Rates, and other modules implemented, and final modules loaded 12 months ago. Council is in a sound financial position and by restructuring its debt additional funds have been freed up to invest in the Shire’s infrastructure. Council will continue its’ commitment to sound fiscal management through long term financial planning to ensure its ongoing financial sustainability.

As a member of the Executive Leadership Team, you will contribute to the organisation’s broader success through corporate planning and budgetary processes. To be successful for this position you will have:

  • IT competence including computer systems and financial software applications, preferably Synergy Soft but this is not essential
  • Sound knowledge of local governments’ record keeping obligations; and
  • the aspiration to succeed in a senior management position

More broadly the position has responsibility for developing and monitoring budgets, managing Council’s internal and external audit function, management and internal controls reporting, management of Council’s procurement, rates, ICT and records management functions, responsibility for Council’s Customer Service offering, and coordination of a range of Council’s governance functions.

You will lead and further develop a stable and professional team to ensure the provision of high-quality corporate support to all Council directorates and business units (saleyards, childcare, airport).

As a calm, pragmatic, hands on and values-based leader, you will have an unwavering focus on the customer and community. Tertiary qualified in a relevant field, your proven experience in effectively managing sometimes unfamiliar business functions will ensure you pick up the nuances of the broad aspects of this position and play a pivotal role in driving the financial sustainability of the region. Bringing Finance and Engineering Asset Management closer together will represent an opportunity to showcase your technical expertise.

Why this Role?

The diversity of the operation is substantial and puts Council on par with several much larger Councils. Voted the friendliest town in QLD – there is a strong community feel, and Cloncurry represents a wonderful place for families to feel safe and to enjoy every advantage of living in outback QLD.

This is no ordinary role in local government. Whilst Cloncurry may not be somewhere you have thought of living and working this is a rare chance to join a financially stable Council and take the reigns of a function that has been well managed as the incumbent heads into retirement. Having the opportunity to say ‘yes’ more than ‘no’ to initiatives that are put forward is unique. Importantly, Council is open to a Finance Manager ready to take the next step in their career and to have additional responsibility and remuneration.

This is a regional centre that has more facilities than most including a fully staffed medical centre, hospital, airport etc.

A Salary of $140-$170K dependent upon experience + super + FMV and provision of a rent-free family home and generous relocation assistance will be offered to the successful candidate.
