About the Region

Nestled between one of the seven natural wonders of the world, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and the World Heritage listed Wet Tropics rainforest, is the beautiful Cassowary Coast Region. Consisting of coastal and hinterland communities with 30,000 residents across the major townships of Cardwell, Mission Beach, Tully, and Innisfail. Known for its hiking trails; waterfalls; reef explorations; cultural and food festivals; Cassowary Coast presents a plethora of extracurricular opportunities and lifestyle options. Proximity to two regional cities (within 2 hours drive) and an international airport.

The Cassowary Coast is named after the distinctive and endangered flightless bird which inhabits the region, and it covers an area of approximately 4,700 square kilometres. Mission Beach is one of the most important remaining homes of the endangered cassowary.

The region is a mix of town, rural and coastal communities boasting beautiful beaches, lush hinterland and scenic mountains. There are over 3,500 businesses operating in the area, with potential for new business growth and development in all the towns and communities. The most recognisable industries linked to the region are tourism and primary industries. The Cassowary Coast is Australia's premier banana-growing region and a well-known cane-growing region.

Essential services are readily accessible. The estimated resident population is 30,000.

The Cassowary Coast is well connected to other parts of the nation via the Bruce Highway which passes through many of the region's townships. The Palmerston Highway provides connectivity with the Tablelands region and is its major goods transport route. The region can also be accessed by sea through the commercial port at Mourilyan Harbour, by air through one of three aerodromes, and by rail.

Cassowary Coast Regional Council

With 30,000 residents across the major townships of Innisfail, Tully, Cardwell and Mission Beach, Cassowary Coast Regional Council employs approximately 360 people and has recently released its 2021-2025 Corporate plan. In developing this Plan, they have reviewed and renewed their corporate goals in line with Council’s new direction and organisational culture. The overarching vision for the Cassowary Coast region is ‘to provide great experiences, deliver value and create a sustainable future for their community.’ By 2025 the goal is regional infrastructure that delivers appropriate levels of service supported by the community and are financially sustainable.

The Role

As the Interim Corporate Services Director, you will report to the CEO and lead a team of 37 people in the Directorate which includes Finance, Procurement, and Information Services, to drive a commercial and customer focused service that builds capability and delivers accountability and financial sustainability.

Apart from the areas of responsibility below the role will also play a leadership role with other leadership team stakeholders to review key processes associated with the Technology One system, ensuring that processes maximise efficiency and customer experience.

Other areas of focus will include:

  • Leading the successful delivery of strategic policy reviews and corporate business solutions that support Councils organisational direction, meets legislative requirements, and adds value to the needs of internal stakeholders
  • Provide clear, sound, and pragmatic expert advice and strategy to support decision making
  • Engagement in high-level critical analysis of a wide range of complex information and formulate effective responses to organisational strategic and operational issues
  • Ensure a high degree of financial control and management within the Directorate and across the organisation
  • Monitoring and reporting to the Executive and to the Council as to the financial performance of the organisation. Leading the selection for the appointment of external consultants and contractors, including monitoring of progress

About You

As a highly regarded Corporate Services Director in Local Government it will be a significant advantage if you have experience with and/or an understanding of the Technology One platform. Having a helicopter view of Council’s Technology One system optimisation will allow you to give Council confidence that the continued improvement of the ERP remains fit for purpose.

Renowned for your ability to set objectives for yourself and others, you take a forward-looking perspective, and can deliver successful outcomes within agreed parameters. Optimising and developing business processes to enhance business outcomes, customer service, streamline operations and minimise costs will characterise your experience to date.

Degree qualifications in accounting, commerce, business, management or other relevant discipline and an Australian CPA or CA membership or equivalent is required.

As a guide, a salary of up to $200K including Super (pro-rated) will be paid to the successful applicant dependent upon experience and qualifications. You will be based in Tully for those wanting to stay in Mission Beach. however with team members spread across the region the role will be required to work in various location to support the needs of Council.
