About Townsville

Townsville is the largest city in Northern Australia and the gateway to mining and agricultural regions. It is perfectly positioned as Australia’s gateway to Asia. Townsville's economy is rebounding, and the new masterplan provides a well-articulated vision for the city to give the private sector the confidence it needs to invest and create jobs.

This diverse economy has significant industries including retail trade, health and education services, government administration and defence, construction, mining, manufacturing, and property and business services. Together, Queensland Rail and the Port of Townsville provide a transport hub for the region’s mining and agricultural industries.

Townsville is also a major service centre, and the main centre for government administration outside Brisbane. Regional health services are provided by the Townsville Hospital. There are several research institutions such as James Cook University, the Australian Institute of Marine Science, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and the CSIRO. The large Australian Defence Force community, due to army and air force bases, also influences the local economy.

Providing a laid-back tropical lifestyle that is complemented by capital city comforts, no other Australian city boasts the resilience, diversity, lifestyle and economic potential that the Townsville North Queensland Region enjoys.

Known as the Second Capital of Queensland, Townsville offers a dynamic lifestyle coupled with strong economic prosperity and is a thriving precinct with access to a variety of world class education facilities, leading edge health care, affordable housing, unique retailing, spectacular events and entertainment, dining precincts and a wide range of outdoor recreation options. With over 300 days of sunshine each year, Townsville’s lifestyle is second to none.

About the Role

With several unprecedented monsoonal events up and down the East Coast of Australia in recent years, Townsville is to some extent ahead of other regional areas in having got its city back on track. This is a unique opportunity to be involved in broader strategic floodplain and coastal management and a genuine chance to broaden out your experience by expanding your learning and expertise in this field and to leverage yourself into more senior roles within Council. Renowned for being a 'solution oriented' engineer you will relish taking responsibility for providing advice on the planning, design and delivery of Council's floodplain and coastal planning and modelling.

You will work closely with the team in a collaborative and open atmosphere to find solutions and deliver quality outcomes for Council. This position is responsible for collaborating with the Strategic Planning section to deliver strategies and plans for the management of floodplains and coastal areas that will feed into both Council’s Planning Scheme and future Capital Works Program. Coordinating and working with multi-disciplinary teams will ensure delivery of the strategies and plans required to ensure Council meet legislative obligations as well as supporting the growth of the city. Experienced with disaster management arrangements, you will be a valued part of the Council’s Disaster Management Team when preparing, responding and recovering from  flooding, cyclone and storm-tide events.

About You

If Floodplain and coastal engineering is your passion this is a role that will enable you to gain invaluable experience and to use the knowledge and experience gained as a springboard to achieve your longer-term goals. Understanding the lessons learned, you will review and tweak the strategy and continue to influence change and improvement across future planning.

For someone experienced in floodplain engineering and currently working in a consultancy, this could be the chance to have some work/life balance whilst you immerse yourself in an interesting portfolio which will also include the Coastal Hazard Adaptation Strategy. Alternatively, you could have 3-4 years’ experience and see this as a once in a lifetime opportunity to gain some invaluable experience that positions you ahead of your peers towards Chartered/Registered Professional Engineer status.

Regardless, you will have effective communication skills and enjoy engaging with a wide range of stakeholders both internally and externally, understand how to manipulate spatial data for analysis and have had some exposure to emergency management and capital works programs involving land use/development suitability.

The financial rewards, career development and work/life balance scenarios make this an attractive role in Local Government. The position offers flexible work life balance arrangements. A six figure salary + 13.5% Super will be paid to the successful applicant dependent upon experience. Benefits include a 9-day fortnight, 5 weeks annual leave and 17.5% holiday loading. Generous relocation assistance will also be provided for the successful candidate. Future Learning and Development opportunities are supported together with reimbursement of some professional registration fees.

Why this Role

From a professional perspective you will have access to a greater ranger of operations that will allow you to build and grow your skills on a different scale and level to what is possible in a capital city or southern regional area. Being involved and across everything from R&D, monitoring systems, policy development, response and recover schemes through to planning development and assessment makes this a broader role and provides a unique career development opportunity.

Importantly, you will also have a direct relationship with the community and a comprehensive understanding of Council’s coastal and floodplain matters.
