About Townsville

Townsville is the largest city in Northern Australia and the gateway to mining and agricultural regions. It is perfectly positioned as Australia’s gateway to Asia. Townsville's economy is rebounding, and the new masterplan provides a well-articulated vision for the city to give the private sector the confidence it needs to invest and create jobs.

This diverse economy has significant industries including retail trade, health and education services, government administration and defence, construction, mining, manufacturing, and property and business services. Together, Queensland Rail and the Port of Townsville provide a transport hub for the region’s mining and agricultural industries.

Townsville is also a major service centre, and the main centre for government administration outside Brisbane. Regional health services are provided by the Townsville Hospital. There are several research institutions such as James Cook University, the Australian Institute of Marine Science, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and the CSIRO. The large Australian Defence Force community, due to army and air force bases, also influences the local economy.

Providing a laid-back tropical lifestyle that is complemented by capital city comforts, no other Australian city boasts the resilience, diversity, lifestyle and economic potential that the Townsville North Queensland Region enjoys.

Known as the Second Capital of Queensland, Townsville offers a dynamic lifestyle coupled with strong economic prosperity and is a thriving precinct with access to a variety of world class education facilities, leading edge health care, affordable housing, unique retailing, spectacular events and entertainment, dining precincts and a wide range of outdoor recreation options. With over 300 days of sunshine each year, Townsville’s lifestyle is second to none.

The Position

This is a critical position so you can truly make your mark and work on some exciting water and wastewater projects. Some of these are quite finicky eg scoping out the condition of assets and providing early identification of problems and delivering solutions. Council manages these projects internally and send anything larger out to consultants so you will enjoy working on smaller scale projects where your ability to produce sometimes complicated and challenging infrastructure designs will be highly regarded.

Key requirements include:

  • drafting of plans for water, wastewater, and civil infrastructure to IPWEA and local government standards
  • Knowledge of the detailed design of pipes and fittings and importantly an ‘understanding’ of the infrastructure you are designing and whether your recommendations are ‘fit for purpose’ solutions that will work.
  • Experience in pipeline design using 12d or Civil3d
  • Ability to interrogate 3D exports from 12D to produce details and design plans
  • Experience drafting in AutoCAD

Success in this role will come from your ability to create detailed and highly accurate drawings within expected time frames for use by the Engineers and Project Managers so project deadlines can be met.

About You

Renowned for consistently delivering high quality and accurate drawings – you are either keen to progress your design career and/or step up and be in an environment where work/life balance is genuinely embraced. Currently working in one of the water utilities or councils you are renowned for your diligence in drafting/design work in water and wastewater infrastructure. Working closely with Engineers will excite you and provide an opportunity to continue learning and further develop your skills.

Your current and/or previous Manager’s will describe you as someone able to:

  • work under minimum supervision and across multiple projects simultaneously
  • demonstrate a high level of attention to detail
  • work as a team player and as a person who can take constructive feedback as a learning exercise
  • demonstrate a working knowledge of submersible pumps, valves, pipework etc
  • prepare civil site layouts, cross-sections, long-sections using AutoCAD
  • display a basic knowledge in hydraulics (preferred)

Why this role?

If you are not a local and a ‘sea change’ is something you have been looking for this could be your chance to enjoy life away from the capital cities and to enjoy all the benefits of a big city but in a coastal location. Providing a laid-back tropical lifestyle that is complemented by capital city comforts, no other Australian city boasts the resilience, diversity, lifestyle, and economic potential that the Townsville North Queensland Region enjoys.

Council is at the beginning of a journey that will be exciting to be part of with the CEO focused on developing Townsville as a City of the Future.

A salary of up to $106K + 13.5% Super + 5 weeks leave with 17.5% loading, RDO and relocation assistance is available for the successful candidate.
