About Townsville

Townsville is the largest city in Northern Australia and the gateway to mining and agricultural regions. It is perfectly positioned as Australia’s gateway to Asia. Townsville's economy is rebounding, and the new masterplan provides a well-articulated vision for the city to give the private sector the confidence it needs to invest and create jobs.

This diverse economy has significant industries including retail trade, health and education services, government administration and defence, construction, mining, manufacturing, and property and business services. Together, Queensland Rail and the Port of Townsville provide a transport hub for the region’s mining and agricultural industries.

Townsville is also a major service centre, and the main centre for government administration outside Brisbane. Regional health services are provided by the Townsville Hospital. There are several research institutions such as James Cook University, the Australian Institute of Marine Science, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and the CSIRO. The large Australian Defence Force community, due to army and air force bases, also influences the local economy.

Providing a laid-back tropical lifestyle that is complemented by capital city comforts, no other Australian city boasts the resilience, diversity, lifestyle and economic potential that the Townsville North Queensland Region enjoys.

Known as the Second Capital of Queensland, Townsville offers a dynamic lifestyle coupled with strong economic prosperity and is a thriving precinct with access to a variety of world class education facilities, leading edge health care, affordable housing, unique retailing, spectacular events and entertainment, dining precincts and a wide range of outdoor recreation options. With over 300 days of sunshine each year, Townsville’s lifestyle is second to none.

About the Role

In this newly created and critically important role, your focus will be to investigate previous modelling done with the aim of improving the water supply and sewerage infrastructure across the region. This is a big challenge and one where success will be about truly understanding where the problems lie through data collection/validation, hydraulic analysis and comparing GIS and Hydraulic models to find the discrepancies. There is potential to input from the outset an upgrade and transition from the current software being used. As you would be aware, it is rare in the regional areas to potentially have at your fingertips, the latest software available and to have oversight and ownership of a whole network.

More specifically the position is accountable for:

  • Establishing, developing, calibrating, and using water and wastewater network models of varying complexity across modelling platforms including: Infoworks ICM, Infoworks WS Pro, Bentley Platforms, eWater Source and others.
  • Working with clients and other members of the team, where your models will inform master planning, strategic /investment planning, network management, operational response, inflow / infiltration studies and network augmentations for water and wastewater systems.
  • Developing and managing flow monitoring programmes to collect and analyse data for model calibration and validation
  • Developing project scopes, managing, and delivering projects to collect asset data to update network models

About You

With qualifications in a field relevant to Water Management, Mathematics, Science, Engineering or pertaining to hydraulic modelling you have previous experience working as a professional in the water/wastewater industry delivering modelling projects from model/build/calibrate to strategic investment studies and operational modelling; including experience in managing and interrogating raw data for use in network modelling or to identify the root cause of potential events.

Understandably, strong interpersonal skills, the ability to maintain good working relationships as well as the ability to prioritise work activities and understand trends and interpretation of results are other prerequisites.

A significant amount of money has been allocated for the purchase of additional software to have this ‘in house’ capability and for you to have genuine ownership and run on an ‘on demand’ basis more efficiently.
