About the Region

Mapoon is located 85 km north of Weipa and approximately 860km north of Cairns. One of the most scenic areas on the Western Cape, Mapoon enjoys the bounty produced by the Wenlock and Ducie River systems and the abundance from the Gulf of Carpentaria. The ecology is diverse and an abundance of birdlife, there is plenty to see and do. Mapoon is one of the gem places where you can finish work and hook a barramundi before tea-time.

Land tenure in the Shire is Deed of Grant in Trust (DOGIT) held by both MASC and the Old Mapoon Aboriginal Corporation. Native Title determination was achieved in 2014 and several Indigenous Land Use Agreement are active with the Mokwirri PBC.

Mapoon is situated in the bauxite mining area and access is through the Rio Tinto Weipa northern section of their mining tenement. The region covers 110,000 hectares and has a population of approximately 300.

About Council 

The Mapoon Aboriginal Shire Council consists of the Mayor and four (4) councillors who are elected by the residents of Mapoon for a four (4) year term. The Executive Management Team is made up of the Chief Executive Officer and Executive Managers in Finance, Corporate Services, Works and Land and Sea Rangers.  The annual budget for the Council is approx. $90 million with a staff establishment of around 50 people.

About the position

The position of Executive Manager Infrastructure Services is accountable to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and is responsible for the strategic leadership of the following functions/Services:

  • Infrastructure
  • Mechanical Workshops
  • Building and Construction
  • Disaster Management
  • Emergency Services
  • Asset Management
  • Project management and delivery
  • Technical working group

We are seeking candidates with a strong Local Government experience who can lead and develop teams focused on serving their community.

About You

We are seeking a suitably qualified executive who knows what it takes to run a community based government organisation. We are seeking someone with strong leadership capacity and a vast knowledge and experience in the building and construction sector and all things infrastructure.

Others will describe you as having unlimited drive and energy with ambition to get things done. Understandably you will have strong interpersonal, writing, and verbal communication skills and be renowned for your ability to communicate with those with varying levels of education and understanding of the work required. You will also display genuine empathy, appreciation and an understanding of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island culture, systems and protocols.
