The Organisation
The Wujal Wujal community is in the Cape York region on the banks of the Bloomfield River and is surrounded by high mountains, waterfalls, river tributaries and creeks. The area’s boundaries are the Cook Shire to the north and Douglas Shire to the south. It is located about 4 hours north of Cairns or 1 hour south of Cooktown by road. Wujal Wujal covers an area of 64 Hectares and the Shire has a tropical climate with both dry and wet seasons.
Located between two UNESCO World Heritage sites, Wujal Wujal is where the rainforest meets the reef – a haven for nature-lovers, photographers, and travellers. Population of the Wujal Wujal Community is approximately 280 people, and it is accessible by road via the coastal road across the Daintree River and by inland road. There is a private airstrip 20km from the Shire.
The Council plays an important role in the provision of essential services, infrastructure and housing and has a strong commitment to ensuring that all other services such as health, education, law and order, land management, employment and training are available and accessible to all members of the community. You will play a part in leading a vision which is strongly focussed on community engagement and building a healthy, connected, inclusive and ultimately, prosperous community. Council operating budget is approximately $9.5M with a staff base of 45 and is led by the Mayor and four Councillors.
The Position
Reporting to the Corporate and Commercial Manager, Council is seeking an experienced Financial Accountant/Finance Manager to take a strong lead now that Council has worked through some significant challenges and are ready to embrace the way forward.
Other responsibilities will include:
- Assisting the Manager, Corporate and Commercial to manage the financial operations of the Council to ensure compliance with all legislative requirements and to required accounting standards
- Assist in managing the process for the requirement of long-term financial planning and annual budgets in compliance with relevant regulations and standards and to provide budgetary information in meaningful and easily understood formats for Council and employees
- Assist in the production of Council's annual financial statements and legislative reports as required by legislation and regulations within the required timeframes
- Manage and provide meaningful and timely reports to Council departments to enable operational compliance and manage departmental budgets
- Manage the financial reporting related to Grant acquittals for each department.
- Maintain all financial processes in conjunction with Manager, Corporate and Commercial within the Wujal Wujal Administration office to increase compliance
- Co-ordinate and manage the administration of Wujal Wujal Administration office
- Build effective working relations including the provision of a high level of customer service to internal and external clients
- Participation and proactive contribution in Council Team meetings

About You
With an ability to pick up new software easily, you will be well supported particularly with respect to learning the PRACTICAL software system used by Council if you have not previously used this system. Your strong Financial Accounting experience will enable you to support the Manager in preparing financial statements, council reports and running the day-to-day operations of the department. Your skills and experience will include:
- Minimum three years' experience gained preferably within Local Government or the public sector and degree qualifications in Accounting plus CA / CPA
- Demonstrated experience in fiscal management including long term financial planning, budgeting, and preparation of annual statements
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Demonstrated experience to lead teams in achieving agreed outcomes, operational goals and improving work culture
- Demonstrated experience to provide practical and legislatively compliant financial solutions to emerging and changing financial requirements
- Demonstrated experience to review and develop new financial policies in line with Council and legislative requirements
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team to achieve positive outcomes
- Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, with ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Indigenous people
- Capacity to demonstrate a high level of commitment to interact positively in a remote Aboriginal community
- The ability to acquire legislative knowledge of Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire Council Local Laws and Policies

A salary of up to $120K + Super will be negotiated dependent upon experience. A three bedroom, fully furnished house will also be provided to the successful applicant.
