Burke Shire is nestled in the rugged and remote outback of Queensland's North West. Covering an area of over 48,000 km2, this unique region may have a small population of approximately 1,600 residents but it is rich in natural wonders and historical significance. The Role:

As a Local Law Officer, you will be essential in upholding community values and ensuring resident safety. This role involves enforcing local, state and federal laws, conducting inspections and addressing compliance issues. You will engage with the community, offering education on regulations and fostering positive relationships with residents and stakeholders. With a focus on environmental management and community engagement, this position enables you to make a meaningful impact in a unique and picturesque setting.

  • Investigate and respond to reported breaches of local laws, such as animal control, noise and vegetation issues.
  • Issue fines and infringement notices for non-compliance and manage daily activities within the Local Laws and Animal Management Program.
  • Promote compliance through education and direct communication with residents.
  • Handle the impoundment, care, release or euthanasia of animals, ensuring humane treatment.
  • Implement pest and weed control initiatives and assist with the regional biosecurity plan.
  • Conduct inspections and assist with operations at Burketown and Gregory aerodromes.
  • Support disaster management efforts, including cyclone preparedness and response activities.
  • Maintain accurate records, reports and compliance documentation.

About You:

A proactive communicator with a strong commitment to community engagement. You need to excel at enforcing local laws, resolving conflicts and building positive relationships within the community. A keen eye for detail and the ability to navigate the unique challenges of a rural environment are essential. If you are passionate about maintaining community standards and ensuring safety, this role provides a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the community.

  • Skilled in managing disputes diplomatically, especially in compliance and enforcement contexts.
  • Ability to operate autonomously, managing daily tasks and making informed decisions with minimal supervision.
  • Familiarity with local, state and federal laws, especially in animal control, pest management and community regulations.
  • Current Class C Driver’s Licence.
  • Category A Firearms Licence with experience in safe firearm use for animal management, including compliance with the Weapons Regulation 2016.
  • Current Agricultural Chemical Distribution Control (ACDC) Licence (or willingness to obtain).
  • ASIC Card (or ability to obtain).
  • Current vaccines (or willingness to obtain) for Q Fever, Rabies, Hep A and B and Tetanus.
