About Council

The Wujal Wujal community is in the Cape York region on the banks of the Bloomfield River and is surrounded by high mountains, waterfalls, river tributaries and creeks. The area’s boundaries are the Cook Shire to the north and Douglas Shire to the south. Wujal Wujal is located about four hours north of Cairns or one hour south of Cooktown by road. Wujal Wujal covers an area of 64 Hectares and the Shire has a tropical climate with both dry and wet seasons.

Located between two UNESCO World Heritage sites, Wujal Wujal is where the rainforest meets the reef – a haven for nature-lovers, photographers, and travellers. Population of the Community is approximately 400 people, and it is accessible by road via the coastal road across the Daintree River and by inland road.

The Position

Council is looking for a dynamic and experienced Disaster Recovery Projects Manager to lead the planning, execution, and delivery of approximately $30M of disaster recovery and capital projects within the community. This is more than just a role - it's an opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of community members by driving recovery efforts and delivering critical infrastructure projects.

Your Key Responsibilities will include:

  • Leading disaster recovery and capital projects, ensuring they are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest standards.
  • Collaborate closely with government bodies, contractors, and local stakeholders to align projects with community needs.
  • Prepare project plans, reports, and presentations, highlighting progress and success.
  • Take an active role in promoting and communicating recovery efforts to foster community pride and engagement.

About You

With qualifications in project management, civil engineering, or related fields you have a proven track record of delivering complex projects within timeframes and budgets. Renowned for your calm disposition, exceptional communication, negotiation, time management, organisational and stakeholder relationship skills you can work independently in a remote community setting, adapting to challenges with a solution and outcome focused mindset. Experience working in Indigenous communities or an understanding of disaster recovery funding programs will be highly regarded.

Why this Role?

  • Impactful Work: Be at the forefront of disaster recovery and community resilience. Your work will shape the future of the region and directly benefit its residents.
  • Community Connection: Immerse yourself in the beautiful Wujal Wujal community and work alongside passionate leaders and stakeholders who are committed to recovery and progress.
  • Career Growth: Gain invaluable experience managing complex projects, liaising with government agencies, and delivering results in a unique and rewarding setting.
  • Breathtaking Location: Experience the natural beauty of the Daintree Rainforest and Far North Queensland while making a difference.

Importantly you will work with a team that celebrates resilience, community spirit, and tangible results. You will help shape a legacy and play a key role in Wujal Wujal’s ongoing recovery and development journey.

The Council has faced some significant challenges in recent years and the appointment in 2022 of a new CEO has ensured Council continues navigating through those challenges. Tropical Cyclone Jasper caused extreme rainfall in December 2023, resulting in severe flooding across the region. Many homes and Council buildings were completely inundated, forcing residents to evacuate for a six-month period. With the help of the army, Red Cross, and numerous other supporting organisations, Wujal Wujal homes have been repaired, the community has returned home, and Council is still in the recovery process, repairing and rebuilding Council buildings and community infrastructure. This could be an incredibly rewarding opportunity and a chance to demonstrate your resilience, tenacity, and ability to truly make a difference.

A Salary of up to $150K + super + FMV and provision of subsidised accommodation and relocation assistance will be offered to the successful candidate.
