About Council
Charters Towers Regional Council is a values driven organisation serving 12,000 residents across a vast and diverse region in North Queensland. Since its formation in 2008, the Council has been committed to delivering high quality services, infrastructure, and leadership that uplifts and empowers the community.
Located just over 130kms from Townsville, Charters Towers Regional Council is governed by a Mayor and six Councillors and employs approximately 250 staff. With a strong focus on respect, consistency, and community connection, the Council is proud of its heritage and excited about its future.
The Position
As Chief Financial Officer (CFO), you will be at the heart of strategic decision making. You will lead a capable and experienced team across finance, procurement, and rates, and work closely with the Executive Leadership Team (ELT) to ensure the Council’s long term financial sustainability. This role is about more than just numbers. It is about building a resilient organisation, driving innovation, and delivering outcomes that matter to the community.
You will be responsible for financial planning, compliance, reporting, and investment strategies, while also playing a key role in shaping the Council’s future through major projects like asset management and long term financial planning. Representing a genuine chance to influence change, this is a role where you can truly make your mark and elevate your career.

About You
Renowned as a strategic thinker with a solid foundation in finance, you have a genuine interest in community impact. Whether you are an experienced CFO, or ready to take the next step in your career, you bring leadership, integrity, and a collaborative mindset. You understand the importance of financial sustainability and have the skills to lead teams, engage stakeholders, and drive continuous improvement.
Degree qualified in accounting, finance, or a related field, you ideally hold CPA credentials or are working towards them and will be appreciative of Council’s support to complete your studies. Experience in local government or with systems like TechnologyOne will be highly regarded, but what matters most is your ability to lead with purpose and deliver results.
Why this Role?
This is more than a job. It is a lifestyle and leadership opportunity rolled into one. Charters Towers offers the best of both worlds: a relaxed, country lifestyle with the convenience of being just 90 minutes from Townsville. You will enjoy short commutes, affordable housing, great schools, quality healthcare, and a welcoming community.
The Council will support your transition with six months of free accommodation and relocation assistance. As part of a united and forward thinking leadership team, you will embrace opportunities to contribute at the highest level, lead workshops, and influence strategic direction. If you are looking for variety, autonomy, and the chance to make a real difference, this is the role for you.
