Manager Major Projects | Mount Isa City Council
Ready to step into a role where you lead major infrastructure delivery and bring your strong technical capability to the table? This is a rare opportunity to shape Mount Isa City Council’s long‑term capital program, building smarter, data‑driven ways to plan, govern and deliver city shaping projects.
The Council
Mount Isa City Council is a community‑centred organisation delivering essential services and critical infrastructure for one of Queensland’s most resilient regions. With an ambitious capital works pipeline and a clear focus on long‑term sustainability and economic transition, Council is investing in modern delivery approaches - strong governance, better data, and practical automation - so projects are planned and executed with confidence. If you’re looking for a role with real scope, visibility and impact, this is it.
The Role
Reporting to the Director of Infrastructure, the Manager Major Projects leads delivery of Council’s most significant infrastructure initiatives planning, design, procurement, construction and close‑out across a diverse portfolio. This role is for a leader who can drive project governance, business cases, risk, and reporting, while also leaning into the “how” of modern delivery: building fit‑for‑purpose tools, dashboards and lightweight automations that improve visibility, scheduling, cost control and decision‑making. You’ll guide a capable team of project managers and engineers, set delivery standards, and help advance major initiatives including water network upgrades, community facility enhancements, and regional economic development projects.

About You
You’re an emerging leader in infrastructure delivery, ready for a bigger platform. You can run multiple projects at pace, simplify complexity, and stay hands‑on when something needs building. You’ve delivered end‑to‑end (inception to acquittal), ideally in local government or a similarly regulated environment, and you know what strong assurance looks like.
You lead with clarity, build trust fast, and use code and data to lift project performance. You will bring:
-
Delivery of complex civil/municipal infrastructure with strong governance, safety and commercial discipline.
-
Strong project controls (schedule, cost, risk, change) and dashboard/reporting capability (e.g., Power BI).
-
Confident stakeholder management and sharp communication across executives, delivery teams, contractors and community.
-
A track record leading, coaching and developing multidisciplinary teams.
-
Degree in engineering, construction, architecture or project management (or equivalent experience).
What We'll Bring
• An attractive remuneration package of $170k - $185k inclusive of super will be negotiated with the successful candidate.
• Fully subsidised housing including utilities
• A fully maintained vehicle (including full private use)
